  • The AEGON companies’ Cedar Rapids based internship program provides college students the opportunity to work in one of the world's leading life insurance and pension companies. It gives each student the chance to utilize their academic experience in a real-world environment.
  • The internship program employs 120-150 interns each year and includes the following departments: Accounting, Finance, Real Estate, Information Technology, Sales and Marketing, and Actuarial Science. Internships can range from three months to twelve months, and may offer full-time or part-time scheduling.

Corporate Tax
  • This internship will provide experience in at least two of the following disciplines:
  • Federal tax compliance – prepare federal tax returns for corporations
  • State tax compliance – prepare state, local and premium tax returns
  • Tax planning – collect, organize and interpret tax return information
  • Tax accounting – compute financial statement tax accruals and tax basis balance sheets
  • Investment taxation – compute and reconcile financial instruments
Requirements
  • Accounting majors in their junior or senior year of college
  • Must show leadership, initiative and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Good academic performance

Corporate Accounting
  • This internship will provide experience in at least two of the following disciplines:
  • Shareholder Reporting – assist in the preparation of consolidated reporting on an IFRS basis for submission to internal management and overseas parent company
  • Regulatory and Capital Reporting – assist in the preparation of Annual Statements, Separate Account Statements, and related audited financials for submission to state regulatory agencies and financial rating agencies. Also includes capital reporting and forecasting
  • Management Reporting – assist in the coordination of the annual budget along with the Corporate division budget. Also includes quarterly reporting for internal management for the Corporate division
  • Market Consistent Reporting (AeMcS Production) –assist in the development and testing of market consistent reporting and migrating the processes from a project environment to real time quarterly reporting
Requirements
  • Accounting or finance majors in their junior or senior year of college
  • Must show leadership, initiative, and effective verbal and written communication skills

Internal Audit
  • Assist in evaluating activities of various departments, divisions, and locations of the organization in accordance with Internal Audit department standards for quality and timeliness
  • Document interview and testing results, and communicate results in both written and verbal form to the supervising auditor
  • Analyze test results, and develop and present draft recommendations to the supervising auditor

Investment Management – Credit Research Group
  • Model financial results of Corporate entities into spreadsheets using SEC filings
  • Develop and update databases for prospective investments and market tracking purposes
  • Model fundamental Corporate spreadsheet
  • Monitor market news regarding individual companies and the economy
  • Participate in earnings conference calls and road-show presentations
  • Prepare and present individual company/investment recommendation(s)
Requirements
  • Successful academic record, preferably in a finance-related field
  • Accounting coursework and familiarity with financial reporting is a plus
  • Strong analytical skills, initiative, attention to detail, and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel are required, while experience with Microsoft Access is a plus

  • Process and audit all transactions including withdrawals, contributions and transfers

Production
The Real Estate Production group primarily works with mortgage bankers who present potential real estate deals which AEGON companies may finance.
  • Assist loan officers in underwriting and investing in commercial real estate loans (ranging from $2 million to $150 million) across the country
  • Valuate commercial properties using discounted cash flow analysis
  • Prepare loan applications and loan committee presentations

Servicing
The Mortgage Loan Servicing, Accounting, and Valuation group is responsible for monitoring the current commercial mortgage loan portfolio
  • Assist the mortgage loan analysts with the collection, organization, and analysis of property, loan, and market information
  • Conduct file research, analyze data, and complete special projects as needed

Special Servicing
Special Servicing serves as the bridge between the Servicing department and the mortgagors of sub-performing and non-performing mortgage loans
  • Develop and implement loan workout strategies for loan assets assigned to the department
  • Maintain current information on the asset management database system and assist with the processing of annual property inspection reports

Actuarial
  • Translate product specifications into valuation assumptions for new products
  • Assist in statutory, GAAP, tax valuation and other miscellaneous reserving requirements
  • Aid in the preparation of the actuarial portions of the financial statements and federal income tax returns
  • Build and run computer asset/liability models using actuarial modeling software
  • Assess current and new product designs for feasibility in the marketplace
  • Price new and existing product designs to ensure that division profit goals are met
  • Assist with quarterly ALM risk profiles, investment income budget, regulatory cash flow testing and embedded value
  • Analyze investment strategies and hedging/derivative applications
  • Assist in consolidation and analysis of divisional cash flow testing and value added submissions
  • Assist in consolidation of review of divisional required surplus calculations, including maintenance of required surplus template and database
  • Compile data for experience analyses and prepare related reports
  • Automate existing processes by writing programs or macros

  • Provide basic support for the Windows, Unix, and Linux server hardware and software environments

  • Develop program models and specifications to meet business unit requirements (30% of project time)

  • Carry out test plans, validate expected results, communicate defects to developers, and update test plan as necessary

INV Systems Technical
  • Gather feedback during implementation of testing technical and business related solutions
  • Maintain network security
  • Review access control requests, information security administration, application support, project research, and System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) guidance for new and existing systems according to compliance policies
Requirements
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is required, and knowledge of relational databases and reporting tools within a client/server environment would be helpful
INV Programmer Analyst
  • Prepare area for Data Warehouse Quality Assurance (QA) cycle
  • Run and monitor QA cycles and review QA checkpoints and error logs
  • Track and document QA issues
Requirements
  • College student working towards a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree
  • Knowledge of finance and business systems would be helpful
  • Relational Database (RDB) exposure and Microsoft tools are required and knowledge of Data Warehouse concepts would be helpful
Information Security
  • Aid in advancing the current Business Continuity (BC), Disaster Recovery (DR), and Information Security programs
  • Participate in BC/DR tests and exercises
Requirements
  • College student working towards a degree in MIS or equivalent
  • Good process management skills
